Forgiveness too big to fit into headlines

O P I N I O N

I witnessed something quite remarkable the other day on live TV and have seen un-extraordinary press coverage of it.
After a jury decided that Bobby Cutts Jr. would not receive the death penalty for killing his lover, Jessie Davis, and their unborn child, the victim’s mother addressed him. She stood before a courtroom and told the murderer of her daughter and unborn granddaughter that she forgave him.
“Your honor, I may not have a family to go home to after this, but I pray that you make a way for this man to someday be able to get out of there and begin a new life, and to hold his son, maybe as a man,” Patty Porter said.
Sure, the latest escapades of Britney and Paris and Lindsey make daily screaming headlines. This remarkable act of forgiveness, however, is buried within a run-of-the-mill news story. The former group’s actions highlight rampant regressive misbehavior; Porter’s act of forgiveness displays an advanced consciousness, one the world need more of, desperately.
And you wonder why few people respect journalists today.
