Tech: The New Zealand Herald reports about a new form of transport — a hypersonic jet with a speed of about five times the speed of sound — that would make it possible to fly to Europe in five hours instead of the typical 24. The Herald reports “the new jet would also be clean and green, burning a liquid-hydrogen fuel that gives off water vapour and nitrous oxide (laughing gas), instead of polluting carbon emissions.”

World: The Times of London reports that six Pakistani men were detained recently after they arrived at Gatwick airport from Barcelona. A tipster in Spain alerted authorities there and according to The Times, “the informant is said to have told police that pairs of suicide bombers planned to strap explosives to their bodies and blow themselves up on the rail and bus networks in Britain, France, Germany and Portugal.”

Nation: After yesterday’s deadly outbreak of tornadoes across the South in which more than 50 people have been killed, NPR interviewed a student who lived through one tornado that hit Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

Business: The Super Bowl upset did more than hearten the hearts of NY Giants fans. According to Bloomberg.com it hit bookmakers in Nevada hard, to the tune of a loss of $2.9 million.

Science: LiveScience.com reports about a study by the University of California, Davis, that found 400 species of birds could become extinct within the next 50 years because of the effects of global warming.
