We don’t need no stinkin’ pathogen sniffers

Nation: New York City can’t understand why the Bush administration hasn’t been pushing for deployment of Autonomous Pathogen Detection Systems that can warn of biological attacks immediately after they occur, The Washington Post reports.

Nation: Property owners in California are bracing themselves for this proposal — Gov. Schwarzenegger wants a 1.25 percent levy on insurance policies to fund firefighting efforts, the LA Times reports. Initial reaction shows that more seem to be upset that the governor is not calling this what it is — a tax — than the cost per property owner.

World: Germany’s cabinet approved an ambitious €3.3 billion plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent in 12 years,  Der Spiegelreports. It still must be passed in parliament, but because Chancellor Angela Merkel worked closely with a coalition of the country’s two largest parties, Der Spiegel says it is expected to be approved easily. Paying attention, Congress?

Life: WCBSTV.com reports that new technology may make waiters a thing of the past. Created by uWink, the touch screen terminals deliver your order directly to the kitchen. Now comes the big question: How much do you tip it?

Sports:Fed up with the doping trend, the International Cycling Union is creating “biological passports” that will be required to compete in the Tour de France, Reuters (via the NY Times) reports. The passports contain a medical profile created through blood tests.

O P I N I O N

Attention women of New Hampshire: Were you watching the TV coverage of the primary results last night? If so then you learned that you voted for Sen. Hillary Clinton in large numbers because a) you felt John and Barack were bullying her at Saturday’s debate; b) she almost cried in public; and c) because her popular ex-president husband challenged the lack of challenges to Obama’s statements on the war in Iraq.
You women voters, as everyone in the media knows, make your choice on the ballot based on emotions, not reason. Of course you wouldn’t have been responding to her record, the points that she made in the debate or the questions she answered from you at length. Now, be good little gals, run along and leave that heavy thinking up to the men folk.
GEESH! What century are we in?
I second what Tom Brokaw said last night — that the egg-on-their-face media should stop telling citizens who they will be voting for. New Hampshire’s results provided a nice exclamation point to his remarks.

Well, I’ve been at this a week now. Thanks for the more than 125 hits
I’ve received from you on my fledgling blog. I’d love to hear feedback
from you or suggestions for stories I should note.
