World: For some background on the violence in Kenya, read this interview with Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai from Der Spiegel.

According to the report, while telling investors to sell off their dollars, Rogers says the U.S. has been “lying” about its currency and he predicts a deep recession. “It’s going to be one of the worst recessions we’ve had in a while because we had so many excesses going into it.”
O P I N I O N
I woke from a dream about nuclear bombs being detonated to hear that our Navy was challenged by Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats near the Strait of Hormuz yesterday. It sounds as if we were seconds away from an international incident that could have lit up the Middle East like Roman candles.
According to reports, the five ships came at U.S. Navy vessels full tilt and broadcast the warning “You are going to blow up within minutes.” They turned around when they were but 200 yards from our ships.
This incident, and the threat issued from the American al-Qaida Adam Gadahn to greet President Bush “not with flowers or clapping but with bombs and booby-trapped vehicles” when he arrives in Israel, will surely have an impact on Tuesday’s primary in New Hampshire. It may signal that Ahmadinejad will not wait for a new U.S. president with a different approach to Middle East issues take power. It may signal that he and bin Laden want punishment wreaked upon the Bush administration before it leaves office.
So much for the holidays; 2008 is getting off to a volatile start.
